This OCP module is a methodical process developed by ACROSS
Consulting to help the client to understand fully the impact,
be it direct or indirect on its business processes or operations
in the event of an undesired event. It is an integral part of
the risk analysis process and is an essential component in the
disaster recovery planning process.
The ability of the company to cope with an interruption of a
business process determines the tolerance of the business process
itself. A wide spectrum of tolerances exists between all the
processes and systems adopted in the company and the business
impact analysis serves to identify and segregate the less tolerable
processes and systems from the rest. In this way, resources
can be more effectively deployed to protect and recover, if
needed, the processes and systems, which have very high significant
impact to the company's business processes and operations.
Once mission-criticality level of every business processes and
systems used in the company is determined, the client can decide
and select the appropriate protection plans, recovery strategies
and contingency / backup plans for each business process or
system in the company. Not all business processes or systems
require extravagant protection plans and recovery strategies,
only those that are deemed as highly mission critical and have
significant impact on the business operations when they are
unavailable.
When all the business processes and systems used in the company
are ranked based on the their level of mission-criticality,
it helps to set clear and defined expectation for the end user
community when comes to recovery or restoration order of affected
processes or systems in the event of an undesired event. When
the end user community are informed of the recovery or restoration
order of the affected systems, they will be more tolerable to
the service disruption and enables the system recovery or restoration
teams to stay focus in their effort to recover or restore the
affected systems as soon as possible.
In conclusion, gaining a good understanding of the impact of
an undesired event on the business processes and operations
enables the client to make the appropriate protection plans,
decide the recovery strategies and contingency / backup plans
for each business process or system in the company.
