This OCP module is designed to assist the client to explore
and develop alternative means, be it the use of alternative
systems or approach, so as to continue or resume the client's
mission-critical business operations in the event of an unplanned
outage or disruption.
Disaster recovery takes time, be it days, weeks or even months,
but the client cannot afford to stop its business operations
and functions indefinitely while the recovery work progresses.
The primary goal of the contingency planning is to enable the
client to continue to operate and function, though may not be
in an optimized manner while the recovery work progresses.
Contingency planning entails the provision of people, place
and processes to cope with and to overcome the affects of an
emergency. It anticipates all possible events and potential
conditions in such an emergency and prescribes alternative ways
to counter them. While there may be a couple of alternative
ways to perform a critical business function, the client needs
to decide and select the most feasible and practical one so
that the selected alternative can be activated and deployed
with ease and in a timely fashion.
When selecting an alternative means to be used for a mission
critical business process or system, one important factor that
needs to be taken in consideration is the ease of transferring
all the business data generated by the alternative measures
back to the restored systems. Besides exploring and developing
the alternatives, the contingency planning process includes
the prescription of how the business data generated by the alternative
measures will be transferred back to the restored systems.
In conclusion, the contingency planning process aims to shorten
the disruption and minimize the impact of the disruption to
the client's business operations. It is all about counter-valiance,
the ability to compensate and make up the consequences and effects
of the undesired event.
